Working Paper MOISASumary The growth of the international market of the horticultural products is made possible by the globalization of an intensive mode of production in synthetic products which mobilizes salaried workers. In the Antilles changes in technological trajectories enables the consideration of other modes of production. This article brings to light how the technical innovation allowing a decrease in the necessity to use pesticides is dependent on an adaptation of the coordination in the mobilization of the salaried work. For this purpose we compare two systems of the use of manual labour between Martinique and Guadeloupe by widening on certain aspects in the transnational. The comparison is based on the characterization of these systems in which manual labour is used and the indicators of performance of the sectors of banana as well as on the adaptation of the technical changes.Résumé La croissance du marché international des produits horticoles se réalise par la globalisation d'un mode de production intensif en produits de synthèses qui mobilise une main d'œuvre salariée. Enhancing the quality of first-year Biology teaching at the University of Stellenbosch
Thesis (MPhil) (Higher Education)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Transformation in biology teaching is inevitable. There is a global concern about the
quality of undergraduate biology teaching, especially when considering the growth in
the fields of biotechnology and the molecular sciences. Programmes of learning have
to be market orientated, and the contents of curricula have to equip students for
entrance into a specific career.
At the University of Stellenbosch the School for Biological Sciences has developed an
interdisciplinary approach to first-year biology teaching. The new programmes in
Biological Sciences, implemented in 2000, contain first-year curricula that introduce
students to the disciplines of genetics, botany, zoology, microbiology, biochemistry
and statistics. This involves participation by six departments, and lecture facilitation in
two languages for up to 600 students. As contact sessions between lecturers and
students are limited, self-study is becoming increasingly important, and lectures
should be fully exploited to obtain deep learning. This study investigated various ways
to enhance the teaching and learning process for first-year biology students in a
module fraught with growing pains and problems.
The influence of software support on student learning was evaluated, while the
introduction of an innovative approach to teaching statistics to first-year students was
analyzed. Supplementing the statistics section with video-recordings of the lectures
was further considered as a possible way of overcoming various obstacles in
especially this section of the module. The application of a practical laboratory course
to enhance the quality of the theoretical lectures was also investigated and evaluated.
It can be concluded that no simple solution could be found to solve the variety of
problems that arose with implementation of the new programmes of learning.
Technology proved to be invaluable, but should be applied after thorough needs
assessment and impact studies have been performed. Provision of IT tools and
facilities do not necessarily imply their application and effect, and innovation and
inspiration still proved to be most effective in enhancing biology teaching.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Transformasie in biologie-onderrig is onvermydelik. Daar is wêreldwye kommer oor
Ses departemente is hierby
geanaliseer is.
The contribution of culture to the spread of HIV
Cultural factors have been shown to play a role in human decision making and behaviour. The main objective for this research was to identify and evaluate the possible influence of Shangaan cultural beliefs, myths and behaviours, on the spread of HIV within the Mnisi tribe. A qualitative method of investigation was followed; interviews with three participants and observations of the Mnisi culture were used in the construction of the investigation and findings. Through the information obtained two cultures influencing the spread of HIV in the Mnisi tribe were identified, they are (1) The culture of power-rule and fear, and (2) The culture of poverty.PsychologyM.Sc.
Approaches to Strengthening Secondary STEM & ICT Education in Sub-Saharan Africa
This paper is based on a predominately desk-based literature review on national policy frameworks, specifically targeting STEM and ICT education in sub-Saharan Africa. Two country scoping exercises were conducted in Zambia and in South Africa which provided additional grey literature and data from interviews with a range of stakeholders from policymakers to students. This is intended as a forward-looking and policy-oriented paper, tol assist the MasterCard Foundation, policy makers and the international development community in implementing high quality secondary STEM and ICT education in sub-Saharan Africa, targeting disadvantaged learners in difficult delivery contexts. The specific objectives are:- To better understand the characteristics of successful national policy frameworks for increasing access for disadvantages groups of learners, including girls, learners from poor socio-economic backgrounds and speakers of minority languages, to good quality STEM and ICT in secondary education.- To identify successful strategies used to address the data gap of student performance, teacher ability and school level resources available for STEM and ICT education.- To develop a diagnostic framework enabling policy makers to analyse their particular context and identify pressure points in the system, where targeted intervention could be particularly helpful
